Gabbeh:

Gabbeh rugs are made by all the tribes of the Fars province and by no doubt many settled villages as well. This is a coarsely woven rug with a fleshy pile and few wefts in between the rows of knots. When weaving a Gabbeh, the weaver feels quite free to improvise and experiment in both colour and design, and so here we encounter very bold compositions, which seem to have an affinity with the works of modern western artists.

Gabbehs are made in two distinct types, the coloured and the naturals. In the former almost anything is possible in terms of both design and colour. The “natural” are often made with undyed yarn in various shades of cream, white, grey, brown, and black.

The important thing about true Gabbeh is that they are not “designed” they are primitive, spontaneous, and utterly unpredictable.
